What is the world’s largest operating copper mine?

Escondida, located in Chile’s Atacama Desert, is the world’s largest copper mine, producing approximately 1m tonnes annually and around 6% of the global supply.
Managed by BHP, the mine is powered entirely by renewable energy from Chile’s abundant solar and wind resources, and has relied solely on desalinated water since 2019.
Escondida, which means “hidden” in Spanish, is jointly owned by BHP (57.5%), Rio Tinto (30%), and the JECO consortium (12.5%) - and like many other customers in Latin America, leverages Landfolio to secure their mineral rights.
